The benefits of Silica for firm and hydrated skin
Our skin is usually the first place we are likely to notice the signs of ageing. So why does our skin age, and what steps can we take to keep it looking younger?
Factors contributing to ageing skin
Ageing of the skin is caused by a number of factors. Lifestyle choices including sun exposure, smoking and stress are all known to cause our skin to age. Declining oestrogen levels as women get older cause the skin to lose elasticity and become dry. However, most of the ageing process is caused by other chemical changes. The components that keep the skin looking youthful are two proteins, collagen and elastin. Young skin still has plenty of these proteins, which is why it looks plump and smooth. However, as we age, our ability to produce them declines, resulting in thinner skin and wrinkles.
Lifestyle changes are required
There are several lifestyle changes you can make to help reduce the effects of ageing on your skin:
- Protect it from the sun.Try to limit your skin's exposure to UV rays, especially when the sun is strongest, between 10am and 4pm.
- Stop smoking. Smoking is known to break down collagen, and contribute to wrinkles around the mouth.
- Try to reduce stress, as this can cause lines and wrinkles to appear prematurely.
- Cleanse regularly with lukewarm water, and moisturise before your skin is completely dry. Use natural, non-abrasive products.
Our skincare experts at Sönd have developed a range of products designed to work with your skin's natural components to reduce the appearance of age, utilising silica to help firm and hydrated skin. Silica is known to assist in the production of collagen, but as we age, our levels of it decrease.
The role of silica
Silica is found in the form of mineral quartz, which is where Sönd source it for use in our products. Our Revitalising Face Serum is rich in silica, and also contains sodium hyaluronate, which helps the skin absorb moisture more effectively, resulting in hydrated, softer skin and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. We also offer Mineral Energising Supplements, which boost your levels of silica from the inside.
Ageing is a fact of life, but more and more people are exploring the benefits of silica for firm and hydrated skin. And until somebody discovers the secret of eternal youth, replenishing the levels of our skin's natural components seems like a pretty good idea.
