What is an Alkaline Lifestyle?

An alkaline lifestyle is a holistic approach to personal wellbeing that encourages us to become aware of and keep the biochemical acid-alkaline in balance within our body. It’s a natural way of living that is essential to our total wellbeing, a healthy weight, happy, vibrant skin, good immunity and an excellent quality of life.

Based on many years of research and study about our biological systems, we believe that the most important aspect of good health is our body balance, or state of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the body’s natural way of balancing everything including our gut bacteria, hormones, blood cell production, immune system, temperature and crucially, our pH.

The moment any of these parameters are put out of balance by factors such as the Western diet, a lack of sleep, stress, fast food, sugary drinks, alcohol or smoking, we experience health issues. These can range from fatigue, becoming overweight and feeling pain to skin problems and problems with mental clarity.

What Do We Mean by Alkalinity?

Alkalinity is opposite to acidity, both of which are measured on the pH scale. Acids are at the low end of the pH scale, from 1 to 6, 1 being the most acidic and alkalines are at the higher end of the pH scale, from 8 to 14, 14 being the most alkaline. A pH of 7 is considered neutral.

What Are The Benefits of an Alkaline Lifestyle

Reduce Acidic Stress

Acidity refers to the consequences of eating an acid-forming food after it’s been through a complex process of digestion.

Our body, as the perfect bio-machine, always tries to maintain its fine balance, called homeostasis, and as such is constantly making fine adjustments to everything, from our temperature to our pH.

Eating such acid-forming foods can cause the body to be put under acidic stress and so homeostasis kicks in to then try to remedy the acidity and bring the pH back to, or as close to the body’s preferred pH of 7.365.

The higher the pH above 7, the more alkaline, so the body’s preferred pH of 7.365 is slightly alkaline.

Eating acid-forming foods (more on those in our detox guide) therefore causes the pH to lower and become acidic, which in turn puts your body under stress. In the short term, the stress hormone cortisol is released. Then in the long term, this can lead to chronic adrenal fatigue, weight gain, skin problems, and chronic inflammation. Consuming a high quantity of acid-forming foods will also mean that the organs of the body will be working much harder, which can also lead to inflammation.

Chronic inflammation, which can be caused by a lifetime of eating acid-forming foods, can then lead to a dysfunction in insulin regulation, gut and digestive problems, sleeping disorders and autoimmune diseases such as type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and even certain cancers. Chronic inflammation is also linked to oxidative stress.

Reduce Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is damage caused by the inability of the body to deal with a high level of nasty, unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are introduced into the body as a result of eating a diet high in fatty, salty, sugary and processed foods, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and breathing in environmental pollutants.

However, normal biological functions such as breathing and digestion also create free radicals. In a normal, balanced state (good homeostasis), these free radicals don’t pose a problem, since they’re used up in other physiological processes. But if our body is out of balance, excess free radicals build up, leading to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is one of the biggest causes of disease and ageing.

Keeping a good level of homeostasis, such as by following an alkaline lifestyle, is one of the best ways of avoiding oxidative stress and chronic inflammation and their associated diseases and premature ageing processes.
