Frequently asked questions:

How to apply day cream on face

Day cream should be applied after cleansing, after applying serum if you use it and before applying makeup. Using clean fingers, apply a blob of day cream of around the size of a five pence coin to your entire face, neck and decolletage. It might help to dot it around your face first, before gently massaging in using small circular motions.

How often should you moisturise your face

We recommended moisturising after cleansing, which we recommend doing twice a day. Any less and you may find your skin feels parched and dehydrated and any more and your skin may feel excessively oily.

Should I moisturise my face after washing it

Yes, you should always moisturise after cleansing, whether you use a facial wash or a creamy cleanser such as our Clean Slate Cream Cleanser. Moisturisers help to rehydrate the skin after cleansing and contain nourishing ingredients that support the skin’s health and are important after cleansing which can strip the skin of moisture and essential oils.

Can you use face moisturiser on eyes

Facial moisturisers are designed for use on the entire face, but they usually suggest that you avoid getting them into contact with your eye area. This is because the eye area can be very sensitive and moisturisers tend to contain concentrated ingredients that could cause some irritation to this delicate skin. It’s best to use a separate eye cream in this area.

Can I use face oil instead of moisturiser

Facial oils come in many different forms, but essentially, they all have an oily texture and as such, will tend to sit on the skin causing it to feel more oily. For this reason, you might not want to use a facial oil on your skin during the day. By all means use a facial moisturiser that contains beneficial oils such as shea butter and sunflower seed oil during the day, but leave the pure facial oils for the night time. If you have very oily skin, try mixing a few drops of facial oil with your normal night time moisturiser to avoid overloading your skin with oil.

Can i use day cream at night

We wouldn’t normally advise using a day cream at night, because this is the time when our skin can usually tolerate a cream that’s a little heavier than those designed to be used during the day. Night creams, such as our Midnight Feast Night Cream are made using nourishing ingredients that hydrate, protect and support the skin as we sleep and are therefore great for helping to keep our skin in it’s healthiest condition.

Which day cream is best

As with all skin care products, the best day cream for your skin, is the one that suits your skin the best. Sometimes, this is a case of trial and error and we advise giving products at least one month to see how your skin reacts. We all have beautifully different skin that has different needs. However, the entire Sönd skin care range has been developed to suit all skin types and our Calming Hydration Day Cream will suit your skin whether it’s ‘normal’, dry, oily, acne prone, sensitive or stressed out.

Ingredients

Aqua (Water)

Also known as purified water, aqua is used to help dissolve all of the active ingredients in our moisturiser so that they mix together well and form a creamy texture that absorbs into the skin.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

A gently hydrating ingredient, caprylic (or capric triglyceride) is an emollient that’s added to our day cream to help replenish the moisture in the skin and prevent moisture from being lost from the skin. It also helps to make the texture of our day cream thick and creamy. Caprylic is derived from a mixture of coconut and glycerin.

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil is also often referred to as simply sunflower seed oil. It acts as an emulsifier, helping all of the water based ingredients mix with the oil based ingredients so that they don't separate and cause our moisturiser to split. Sunflower seed oil is also rich in omega 6 fatty acids that help to hydrate, soothe and calm dry and irritated skin.

Glycerin

The glycerin in our day cream is derived from plant sources rather than animal sources and has excellent skin hydrating properties. It’s a thick, gloopy liquid with no colour or fragrance and acts as a humectant that draws moisture into the skin from the air helping to soothe and hydrate dry, irritated or sensitive skin.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter

Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter is more commonly known as shea butter. It’s derived from the nut of the shea tree which is native to Africa and is rich in antioxidants, vitamin E and fatty acids. Shea butter is a type of emollient which helps to soften and smooth the skin by mimicking the natural lipid (fat) layers within the skin.

Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate

Methyl glucose sesquistearate is an emollient that helps to keep the skin soft and smooth. Derived from corn sugar, it’s also used in our day cream as an emulsifier to help the water based and oil based ingredients mix without splitting. Suitable for sensitive skin, it makes the skin feel satiny smooth.

Squalane

The squalane in our day cream is derived from plant sources such as sugarcane and rice bran. It helps to hydrate the skin by acting as an emollient that traps moisture in the spaces between the skin cells. It promotes soft, smooth and hydrated skin without making the skin feel oily or greasy.

Sodium Bicarbonate

More commonly known as baking soda, the small amount of sodium bicarbonate in our day cream helps to keep the pH stable and is safe for use at this level on sensitive skin.

Saccharide Isomerate

Saccharide isomerate is used in our day cream to effectively hydrate the skin. Completely plant based and derived from sugar, it does this by binding to the skin cells and promoting the production of hyaluronic acid which naturally hydrates the skin. It’s gentle and safe to use even on sensitive skin.

Stearyl Alcohol

A type of fatty alcohol, stearyl alcohol is derived from coconut and palm kernel oils. It helps to prevent the water based ingredients in our day cream separate from the oil based ingredients, making it more stable. It also helps to create the creamy texture of our day cream, making it feel thick and luxurious yet non greasy and non pore blocking.

Tocopheryl Acetate

Tocopheryl acetate is also known as vitamin E acetate and is a form of vitamin E used in skin care products and vitamin supplements. Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin that helps to protect the skin from free radicals that can cause skin damage and ageing.

Silica

Silica naturally occurs in sandstone, granite and clay and is the hero ingredient in our products. It gives them their beneficial alkalising properties that support and nourish the skin. It also helps the other beneficial ingredients in our day cream absorb into the skin.

Magnesium Chloride

Magnesium chloride is a naturally occurring substance that helps to increase the spreadability (or viscosity) of our day cream, making it easier to apply.

Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate is a form of citric acid which is found in citrus fruits. We’ve added it to our day cream as an alternative to parabens as it acts as a preservative to help prolong its shelf life.

Calcium Citrate

Like potassium citrate, calcium citrate is a form of citric acid which is found in citrus fruits. It's used in our day cream as a preservative as an alternative to parabens which can irritate the skin. Citric acid is considered gentle enough for use on sensitive and delicate skin types.

Moringa Oleifera Leaf Extract

Moringa oleifera leaf extract is more commonly known as moringa. Derived from trees native to north west India, it helps to hydrate the skin, reduce redness, inflammation, dryness and itching and can even reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Moringa can also help to heal the skin after exposure to the sun.

Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract

Extracted from the leaves of the olive tree, olea europaea (Olive) leaf extract helps to moisturise, hydrate and nourish the skin. It’s gentle enough to be suitable for sensitive skin and won’t irritate the skin or block the pores. Rich in antioxidants, olive leaf extract also helps to neutralise the skin damaging and ageing effects of free radicals.

Punica Granatum Flower Extract

Derived from the flowers of the pomegranate tree, punica granatum flower extract contains antioxidants which help to calm irritated and inflamed skin by neutralising the damaging effects of free radicals. It also has anti ageing properties and helps to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan) Powder

Extracted from seaweed, chondrus crispus (carrageenan) powder or simply carrageenan helps our day cream form a fine layer on top of the skin, helping to hydrate, nourish and protect the skin. Rich in antioxidants, peptides and amino acids, it supports healthy, hydrated skin and helps to protect it from environmental stressors.

Tocopherol

Tocopherol is the scientific name for vitamin E, which plays an antioxidant role in the skin. Antioxidants help to neutralise damaging free radicals which if left to become chronic can lead to irritated, inflamed and damaged skin.

Maltodextrin

Derived from plant based sources that are rich in starch such as corn, potatoes and rice, maltodextrin helps to keep our day cream stable and helps all the ingredients bind together. It also helps to soften the skin.

Myristyl Myristate

With emollient properties, myristyl myristate is a fatty alcohol derived from vegetable oils that helps to promote soft, smooth, well hydrated skin. It also helps to keep the texture of our day cream thick, smooth and creamy.

Benzyl Alcohol

An alternative to harmful preservatives such as parabens, benzyl alcohol is found in some essential oils such as jasmine and ylang ylang. It helps to stabilise our day cream allowing it to last longer. Without this kind of preservative, our products wouldn’t last more than a few days outside of the fridge.

Xanthan Gum

Xanthan gum is a natural thickener which helps to give our day cream a rich, creamy texture and allows it to be applied to the skin easily. It’s produced as a natural by-product of bacterial fermentation and is completely safe to use on the skin.

Cetyl Alcohol

Cetyl alcohol is another type of fatty alcohol and is derived from coconut oil. It acts as an emollient, helping to moisturise, soften and smooth the skin.

Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid is a type of preservative that is considered less sensitizing to the skin than others such as parabens. Derived from the bark of certain fruit trees, benzoic acid also helps to moisturise the skin and soothe irritated or inflamed skin. It’s rich in antioxidants which help to reduce free radical damage and skin ageing.

Dehydroacetic Acid

Used as a preservative, dehydroacetic acid is synthetically produced. It helps to prevent the growth of fungi and other microorganisms that can breed in skin care products and cause them to spoil.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is a type of fruit acid or alpha hydroxy acid or AHA. It’s derived from citrus fruits and helps to gently exfoliate the top layers of the skin, helping to unclog blocked pores and brighten the skin.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a derivative of vitamin C and has antioxidant properties that help to neutralise the damaging and skin ageing effects of free radicals. It also helps to even out skin tone and promote collagen production.

Sodium Citrate

Sodium citrate derives from the citric acid found in citrus fruits. It acts as a preservative in our day cream and also has antioxidant properties, helping to maintain the health of the skin.

Alcohol

Used in tiny amounts, the alcohol in our day cream helps to make it lightweight and easy to apply and to help deliver the targeted ingredients deeper within the skin’s layers where they’re needed.

Parfum (Fragrance)

The parfum in our day cream is derived from natural plant based sources and provides a delicate, gentle fragrance.
