Frequently asked questions:
What is serum?
A face serum is a concentrated facial product designed to boost the skin and deliver beneficial nutrients. Because they’re so concentrated, they’re best used more sparingly than a moisturiser.
What does serum do?
Face serums penetrate deeper into the skin than a moisturiser (which tends to sit on the skin and only reach the upper layers). Different serums do different things, but they generally help to increase hydration, manage acne breakouts, calm irritation or prevent or slow down the visible signs of ageing.
How to use serum?
Face serums are best used after cleansing and before moisturising. Once you’ve thoroughly cleansed your skin using a cream cleanser such as our Clean Slate Cream Cleanser, pat your skin dry. Once dry, apply your face serum and wait until dry before applying your day cream. Since face serums help to protect the skin against environmental damage, they’re best used during the day rather than at night.
How to apply serum?
Face serums such as ours are best applied to dry skin. Use a coffee bean sized amount and using clean, dry fingers, gently pat the serum into your skin or use gentle circular motions. Make sure you cover your entire face (minus the eye area), jawline, neck and decolletage.
Should I use serum before moisturiser?
Yes, face serums are designed to be applied to the skin after cleansing and before using a moisturiser.
What serum should I use?
As with any skin care, the right serum for you is one that respects the needs of your skin and doesn't cause it to react with irritation, redness, inflammation, breakouts or sensitivities. Sometimes this is a case of trial and error to find the right one for you. It’s best to give it at least one month, preferably three, to see if a face serum works for you. The entire Sönd skin care range has been developed with sensitive, stressed out, oily, dry or acne prone skin in mind, and therefore our face serum could well be the best one for you.
How to use hyaluronic acid serum?
A hyaluronic acid serum can be used in the same way as any serum and should be applied sparingly to clean skin before using a moisturiser.
Ingredients
Aqua
Aqua, otherwise known as purified water, helps all of the ingredients in our face serum dissolve and stay mixed together to create its texture and consistency.
Pentylene Glycol
Pentylene glycol helps the oil and water based ingredients in our face serum mix together without separating. It’s produced as a natural by-product of the sugarcane industry and gives our serum a thick, easy to apply consistency.
Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil
More commonly known as sunflower seed oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil is an emulsifier. This means that it helps the water based ingredients in our face serum bind with the oil based ingredients so that they don’t separate and cause the serum to split. Rich in omega 6 fatty acids, it helps to calm irritated skin and hydrate and smooth dryness.
Cetearyl Alcohol
Cetearyl alcohol is a type of fatty alcohol that acts as an emulsifier in our face serum. It helps the oil based and water based ingredients mix without separating, improving the texture of our serum.
Glyceryl Stearate Citrate
Glyceryl stearate citrate is an emulsifier that helps the water and oil based ingredients in our face serum mix together without splitting. It’s derived from plant based sources and also acts as an emollient, helping to smooth and soften the skin.
Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate is more commonly known as baking soda. We use it very sparingly in our face serum to keep the pH stable. At the levels we use it, it’s perfectly safe for use on even sensitive skin.
Saccharide Isomerate
Derived from sugar, saccharide isomerate is a natural, gentle and safe skin hydrator that’s suitable for sensitive skin. It works by binding to the skin cells and promoting the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, that hydrates the skin.
Silica
A naturally occurring substance, silica is derived from sandstone, granite and clay and is responsible for the alkalising effect of our serum. It nourishes and supports the skin and also helps the skin absorb all of the other beneficial ingredients in our face serum.
Magnesium Chloride
A naturally occurring substance, the magnesium chloride in our face serum helps to keep its texture spreadable so that it’s easier to apply.
Potassium Citrate
Potassium citrate is a preservative that derives from citric acid found naturally in citrus fruits. Preservatives help to extend the shelf life of our face serum, meaning that it will last longer on your bathroom shelf.
Calcium Citrate
Similarly to potassium citrate, calcium citrate is derived from the citric acid naturally found in citrus fruits and acts as preservative in our face serum. These kinds of preservatives are a more gentle alternative to harsh parabens.
Sodium Hyaluronate
With a smaller molecular size than hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate can penetrate deep into the lower layers of the skin. Derived from plant based hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate is a humectant that draws water from the atmosphere into the skin and holds it there, helping to increase hydration.
Moringa Oleifera Leaf Extract
More commonly known as moringa, moringa oleifera leaf extract is derived from the moringa tree native to north west India. Moringa helps to heal the skin after sun exposure and also hydrates the skin and helps to reduce irritation, inflammation, redness and itching. It also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract
Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract is derived from the leaves of the olive tree and is rich in antioxidants that protect the skin from harmful free radical damage and ageing. It also helps to hydrate, moisturise and nourish even the most sensitive of skins and won’t block the pores or cause irritation.
Punica Granatum Flower Extract
Punica Granatum Flower Extract is derived from the flowers that grow on the pomegranate tree. Rich in free radical neutralising antioxidants, it calms the skin and reduces irritation and inflammation. Pomegranate flower extract also helps to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Glycerin
Our face serum contains plant derived glycerin rather than animal derived and has excellent skin hydrating properties. Glycerin is a type of humectant that draws moisture from the surrounding air into the skin where it locks it in, hydrating and smoothing.
Squalane
The plant (not animal) derived squalane in our face serum hydrates the skin. Squalane is an emollient that helps to trap moisture in the spaces between the skin cells, ensuring that the skin stays moisturised. Derived from sugarcane and rice bran, it promotes smooth, soft skin without causing oiliness or greasiness.
Tocopherol
More commonly known as vitamin E, tocopherol is an antioxidant vitamin. It helps to neutralise free radicals that if left alone, can damage the skin cells causing redness, inflammation and irritation.
Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin helps the ingredients in our face serum mix together without splitting or causing our serum to spoil. It’s derived from starchy plants such as corn, potatoes and rice and also helps to soften the skin.
Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate
Derived from plant based fatty acids and amino acids, sodium stearoyl glutamate is an emulsifying agent. This means that it helps the oil based ingredients and water based ingredients in our face serum mix so that it doesn’t split and become unusable.
Xanthan Gum
Xanthan gum is a natural by-product released by bacterial fermentation and is safe to use on even sensitive skin. It’s a natural thickening agent that gives our face serum a creamy texture and allows it to spread evenly across the face.
Citric Acid
Citric acid is derived from citrus fruits and is a type of alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA. It gently exfoliates away the uppermost layers of skin helping to promote clear, bright and healthy skin.
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
A derivative of vitamin C, sodium ascorbyl phosphate is an antioxidant. Antioxidants help to neutralise free radicals, harmful molecules that can cause skin damage and skin ageing. It also helps to promote the production of collagen and even out the skin tone.
Sodium Citrate
Derived from the citric acid found naturally in citrus fruits, sodium citrate helps to promote a longer shelf life in our face serum by acting as a gentle preservative. It also has antioxidant properties that helps to keep the skin healthy.
Alcohol
Used in low concentrations, the alcohol in our face serum helps to deliver the beneficial ingredients deeper into the layers of skin. It also helps to keep the texture of our serum lightweight and easy to apply all over the face.
Parfum (Fragrance)
We use natural, plant based parfums to give our face serum a gentle, delicate fragrance.
