How to Get Rid of Acne Skincare Routine

Choosing the Right Skincare for Acne Prone Skin with Sönd

If you have adult acne, then you’ve more than likely spent a fair bit of time researching how best to look after your skin. You might have tried various different over-the-counter products to help fight acne and your blemish-prone skin. These products such as acne treatment gels and washes may have had some effect. But they may have also caused you to end up with dry or sensitive skin.

Or, you may have spoken to your GP about prescription strength acne treatment that contain ingredients like salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells or retinoids that help increase skin cell turnover. You might have even sought the opinion of a board-certified dermatologist to help you with a skincare routine for acne-prone skin.

But did you know, that you don't have to use specific acne-prone skin care products to clear acne and get your skin under control?

Often, these kinds of acne products can be very harsh and actually make your skin more sensitive or irritated. Instead, using gentle skin care, developed to nourish the skin deep from within, helping to protect the skin barrier and to hydrate your skin, can keep the skin happier than it's ever been.

But, where do I buy these products we hear you cry! The answer is right here, at Sönd.

Skincare for Acne Prone Skin

Whether you’re young and suffering teenage acne for the first time, you’re experiencing breakouts that coincide with your period, pregnancy or menopause or you’ve had acne prone skin for as long as you can remember, we hear you.

Unlike many faceless skin care brands that cater for mild to moderate acne or even moderate to severe acne, we do things differently here at Sönd. We understand the workings of the skin, especially skin that’s prone to different types of acne or any other distressing skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema or psoriasis.

How? Because we’ve been there. We have acne prone skin that gets stressed out on a whim and acts contrary for endless reasons including our hormones, the weather, our stress levels and our diet.

So each one of our products is designed and developed, by us, for us and for you, to respect the needs of acne prone skin. (But not only that, our products are ideally suited to any kind of skin inflammation, oily skin, sensitive skin types and skin that simply refuses to conform.)

The Best Acne Skincare Routine

Browse our product pages and you’ll see some of us demonstrating how to use our products and how they’ll help to manage your acne. Our Skin Stories also demonstrate just how much change our products can make to your skin.

So here, we’re going to talk about our products and how they’re developed for tackling the underlying causes of acne, rather than just managing the symptoms (they also manage the symptoms to boot, though!). We’re super proud of our products, and we love talking about them, so let’s go. But first...

What Makes Our Acne Solutions So Beneficial?

Our hero ingredient is a unique blend of alkalising silica salts. They help to nourish the skin, deep within the lower layers and help to tackle the root causes of acne and other contrary skin conditions.

We also use nothing but naturally occurring plant derived oils, butters and botanicals that are gentle on the skin, yet incredibly nourishing, hydrating and protective. They’re all non pore blocking, or non comedogenic meaning that your skin will stay clear, clean and bright.

So how do our products form part of a skin care routine that helps to get rid of acne spots and breakouts?

Our Cream Cleanser to Cleanse Acne-Prone Skin

Even with stressed out skin, your skin will still be at its happiest when it’s cleansed properly. If you leave traces of dirt, grime, makeup, excess oil, bacteria, cellular debris and pollution on your skin, your pores can become blocked leading to more outbreaks, spots and distress.

In other words, your skin doesn't like being unclean. Dirty skin, with clogged pores covered by a layer of stale sweat or last night's makeup can make acne worse. So always cleanse using a specific skin cleanser after exercise or being in a hot climate all day and always remove your makeup at night.

This is especially important if you have one of the more severe forms of acne, such as inflammatory acne or cystic acne.

Cleansing with soap and water, face wipes or any other type of harsh cleanser will irritate and even inflame your skin. So it’s best to treat your skin to a gentle cleanse using a product that lifts away dirt, makeup and other impurities, without stripping it of its natural oils.

Our Rebalance & Reset Cream Cleanser does just that! We developed it to be kind to the skin, and its shea and cocoa butters gently lift grime away from the skin, leaving the skin feeling fresh and clean. It’s also packed with botanicals and skincare ingredients that help to soothe the skin as it’s being cleansed, and really is the hero product in the best skincare routine if you suffer from adult acne.

(And for the record, face wipes are a complete no no, regardless of your skin type. Don't just take our word for it, this is also according to dermatologists!)

Moisturising Skincare Products for Acne-Prone Skin

We’ve also developed two different moisturisers, a day time one and a night time one, for use after using our cream cleanser in the morning and before bed. Both our Calming Hydration Day Cream and our Overnight Replenishment Night Cream have been developed to support the needs of skin that can break out and experience acne.

They’re both gentle, hydrating and nourishing without overloading the skin with pore blocking oils or causing irritation or redness. They support the upper layers of the skin as well as hydrating deep within the lower layers and are ideal for dry skin types as well as oily - a rare find in the world of skincare.

Our night cream is slightly thicker than our day cream. This means that it’s ideal for an extra nourishing overnight boost, when your skin can tolerate a little extra. Our day cream is super moisturising without causing greasiness and will keep your skin hydrated all day. Both products can be used to support the skin all year round.

Serums and Salicylic Acid Acne Spot Treatments

For some people, cleansing and moisturising their skin twice a day is enough of a skin care regime. But for others, they like to use one or two extra products. That’s why we developed our Deep Hydration Serum and our Refreshing Essence Toner.

Our serum provides an extra layer of protection for the skin during the day, helping to defend it against the damaging effects of pollution and environmental toxins. If left undefended, this kind of environmental attack can lead to common skin problems such as redness and irritation that those with acne typically experience.

Designed to complement our skin care range, our toner removes impurities from the skin and soothes the redness and itching of irritated skin. Both will help to further protect your skin and help you manage your acne breakouts.

Our Purifying Clay Face Mask is a clay mask designed for weekly use that draws deep seated dirt from within the skin to help keep it happy and deeply cleansed. Deep seated dirt can be a trigger for hormonal acne, so it's best removed.

Finally, our Clearing & Calming Breakout Roller contains salicylic acid, considered one of the best exfoliators for acne-prone skin that can be used directly on a breakout to help clear the blocked pores and calm the inflamed skin.

Other Tips for Managing Stubborn Acne, Blackheads and Blemishes

At Sönd, we make no secret of the fact that we believe in a holistic approach to managing acne. This means that as well as using skin care products designed specifically for stressed out, non conformist skin to help from the outside, we can also consider what we do on the inside to help manage our skin.

This includes eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and avoiding highly processed foods or those that are high in saturated fats, salts and sugars. A diet rich in differently coloured fresh foods means a diet rich in antioxidants which help to neutralise free radicals that can damage our cells, including our skin cells. Acne may still be a problem for you, but you'll be minimising your chances of a breakout by living a healthy lifestyle.

Other steps to a holistic skin care routine include avoiding stress (stress causes acne to flare up) wherever possible and adopting strategies that help to minimise the effects of stress, such as practicing mindfulness and yoga.

Getting enough sleep is also crucial, as is staying hydrated. Both poor sleep and being dehydrated can have a knock on effect on the skin, and cause it to feel dry, irritated and dull.

The best acne treatments will be the ones that suit your skin the best and sadly, it can be a case of trial and error until you find the right ones. Try Sönd however, and you may well make that search easier. We wish you all the best with managing your skin and truly hope that you find the best products and regime that suits you and your uniquely beautiful skin and to treat acne breakouts.
