Pimple Popping 101

Of course, the best thing to do for spots is to leave it well alone - you’re interfering with your body’s healing process and causing extra inflammation and potentially, long term scarring… but that doesn’t stop it from being tempting now and then. So if you did give into the urge and do the deed, there are still some ways to make it a little better for your skin. Here’s our foolproof seven-step guide to keeping your skin scar-free.

Step One - Keep it Clean

You’ve essentially created an open wound, so treat it as you would any other. Keeping it clean is key for minimising future scarring, so avoid contaminating your skin with bacteria on your fingertips which could cause an infection. Keep using a gentle cleanser, like our Clean Slate, avoid touching it and make sure you’re thoroughly washing any makeup brushes or sponges that come near to the area.

Step Two - Keep it Moisturised

Until it stops bleeding, apply pressure with a clean paper towel or cloth. Once this stops, use a cotton bud and cover the spot with a gentle moisturiser. Avoid anything that’ll irritate the skin, and anything that exfoliates. Our Midnight Feast works wonders.

Step Three - Keep it Gentle

While the spot heals, treat it with kid gloves. Your skin will be extra vulnerable at this time, so stay away from anything that chemically exfoliates or rejuvenates, and especially anything with Vitamin C in it, as this will definitely sting. Don’t be tempted to book any facials, either, as they shouldn’t be done on open wounds. Try our Sidekick for a gentle, daily pop of moisture.

Step Four - Keep it at Arms Length

The key bit of knowledge is… don’t touch it! The temptation is there, but don’t keep prodding or picking at it as this will make infection and scarring much more likely.

Step Five - Keep it Covered

If it’s a big spot, try keeping it covered at night with a hydrocolloid bandage or a silicone sheet. Or, if you just want to speed up the healing process, sleep with a thick layer of moisturiser over it.

Step Six - Keep it in Mind

The odd spot now and then isn’t too much of an issue, but if you’re regularly getting them, take a look at some prevention methods. Use a cleanser without too many harsh chemicals in, go for a direct spot treatment that contains benzoyl peroxide, or ask your GP about prescription retinoids.
